Code Review
Brief checks a change against your team’s decisions, including the constraints the code can’t show you.
A one-line rename
with an audit behind it
An engineer asks Brief to check a table rename against the team’s decisions. Nothing in the repo says the old name matters.
A compliance document does.
EXHIBIT A · THE FREEZE
benchmarks
The Q4 evidence package and operating procedures refer to the table by this name. A compliance document freezes it under decision D-042.
Q4 audit schema naming freeze
Keep existing schema names unchanged until the Q4 audit evidence review completes and Compliance lifts the freeze.
ItemCurrent requirement
- Existing table name
- Retain
benchmarks - Proposed replacement name
- Defer
peer_benchmarkspending review - Authority to lift the freeze
- Compliance Lead after the Q4 evidence review
The benchmarks table must retain its existing name. The evidence package and operating procedures refer to that name, so a rename changes the relationship between the system and the material being reviewed.
EXHIBIT B · THE COMMIT
peer_benchmarks
A clearer name in a verified, one-file commit. Nothing in the diff, the message, or the file name points to the audit.

BRIEF CHECKS ONE AGAINST THE OTHER
BRIEF’S ANSWER
SOURCES
- CONFLICT
- The commit renames benchmarks, which directly contradicts D-042, “Schema naming during the Q4 audit.” The table must keep its name through the Q4 SOC 2 audit evidence review.
- Sources: c3df4c0 · D-042
- OWNER
- The Compliance Lead holds authority to lift the freeze. Engineering can’t treat the rename as resolved on its own.
- Sources: Q4 audit schema naming freeze
- NEXT STEP
- Flag the rename to the Compliance Lead for review before any further action.
